The practice of Criadazgo

Paraguay

Paraguay
Anthrologica conducted a synthesis of existing literature on the cultural practice of criadazgo (a common practice in Paraguay that involves sending children to relatives or other families in exchange for food and education). The synthesis examined the factors contributing to the persistence of this practice and identified strategies for its mitigation. The study addressed key evidence gaps and highlighted the need for further primary research to better understand the current context of criadazgo in contemporary Paraguay. To complement the synthesis, Anthrologica produced three thematic briefs exploring: the perspectives of children and adolescents who have experienced criadazgo; the role of gender norms in shaping the practice; and the relationship between criadazgo and violence. Together, these outputs provided critical insights to inform future research, policy and programming.
